Wireless sucks – a story of an 18th century building

I have been working with wireless in the past couple of weeks, and I conclude as always that wireless is overrated 🙂

Asus RT-N16 and openwrt

I have tried something new. To enable our students to start working with the technology, we decided on doing Tech Templates.

The concept is simple – make the tech available using less than 10 steps. The first one is about getting Openwrt running on the Asus RT-N16 router. Reflash the router in 4 steps – no techie knowledge needed.

OpenWrt and Linksys WRT160NL

My primary router died (and will be dissected later), so I bought a new one. It was a Linksys WRT160NL, and it took me 10 minutes to unwrap it and install OpenWrt.

Building OpenWrt

I though it would be easy to compile and build OpenWrt from source. This resembles compiling your own Linux kernel, so I thought that it would be simple for me.

The power button on my Asus WL-500g Premium router is blinking slowly and I cannot get access to the device. It probably means that it fails to boot. This blog is about how I got it up and running again.
