Libvirt, spice and copy’n’paste

leave a comment »

libvirtLogoI use virtual machines a lot on my laptop, and copy’n’pasting between host and VM doesn’t work out-of-the-box. It turns out to be simple.

Following this blog post, it is all about installing the virtio drivers. Double check that your virtual machine has the “channel spice” of type spicevmc as described in the blog post. For my version of libvirt, this is enabled by default.

On windows:

  1. Go to the official spice download site
  2. Download the windows binary guest additions
  3. Run and install them

On Debian/Ubuntu (requiring X):

  1. apt-get install spice-vdagent

This enables two-way copy’n’pasting. It also enables balloon drivers and other virtio “hardware”.

Bonus info

For use in shortcuts or the like, this

virt-viewer -c qemu:///system <domain name>

lets you connect to the virtual machine without going through virt-manager. I requires you to have proper permissions, which you have if you can use virt-manager.
